How to get around in Placencia, Belize

Last Updated: September 9, 2025By

Logistics are one of the biggest parts of planning an overseas trip. If you’re traveling to Placencia, Belize, you’re probably wondering how best to get to and from the village – and how to get around when you’re there. But don’t worry: you’ll have plenty of options to choose from. Here are just a few.

1 Rent a golf cart or bicycle

If you’re going to be cruising around locally, skip the rental car and opt for a lighter-weight vehicle. Economical and affordable, golf carts are a great way to explore along the peninsula or to travel from your hotel into the Village. If you prefer to get around on two wheels, bicycles are another great option (weather permitting). Both are available at great rates from local tour operator Captain Jak’s.

2 Stroll about on your own two feet

Once you’re in town you’ll find getting around is easy. Placencia Village is small and walkable, and exploring on foot lets you browse about and take in its many cheerful, intriguing sights. Even if you’ve rented a bike or a scooter, you might find that you end up parking it somewhere in preference for walking around.

3 Take a shuttle into town

Many of the larger resorts on the Placencia Peninsula offer shuttles to and from the Village, making it easy for guests to get around without a car. Some are complimentary (like Sirenian Bay) while others charge a small fee.  Most notable is the Inky’s Trolley, which offers guests access to a repurposed street car that trundles into town on a regular basis.

4 Hire a car (or driver)

If you’re a confident driver and can handle unpredictable roads and unconventional signage, renting a car is an option. Note that driving at night can get hairy, so it’s better to avoid this where possible. For those who want the convenience of a car without the hassle, consider a taxi instead.

5 Hop on the ferry

There are two ferries (water taxis) out of Placencia: one that will take you over to Mango Creek, and one that will set you on course to Honduras. Low-cost and picturesque, both can save plenty of time and reduce road detours – but watch out for choppy ocean conditions before you travel.

6 Grab an airport lift

Most travelers will fly into Belize City, which is about a 3-hour drive from Placencia; some fly into Placencia airport, which is about 20 minutes away. While buses are an option, your best bet is to arrange a ride to and from the airport. Most hotels will happily provide this as a complimentary service or for a reasonable fee.

If you’re not sure about the best transport options for your Placencia, Belize trip, ask your host. They’ll be able to set you up with a suitable, affordable ride – and make sure that you get safely from point A to B.
