Top sights to see on your first Placencia, Belize visit

Last Updated: September 9, 2025By

With its picturesque beaches, colorful storefronts and proximity to both jungle and island adventures, Placencia offers plenty to see and do. If you’re not sure where to begin, we recommend these top sights and activities.

1 Stroll the Placencia Boardwalk

Lined on both sides with brightly painted restaurants, shops and bars, the famous Placencia Boardwalk is where all the action is. Stroll the length of this pedestrian-only thoroughfare to browse local arts and crafts, taste freshly made gelato or daiquiris, or pull up a chair at a casual Creole-inspired cafe.

2 Head out on the water

Placencia is lapped by the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, which is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, SCUBA diving or even fishing. Local tour operator Captain Jak’s offers a variety of tours ranging from swimming in the shallows with turtles and rays all the way through to exploring the wonders of the infamous Great Blue Hole. They’re a PADI-affiliated dive center, so you’re always in good hands.

3 Play a round of mini golf

For a change of pace, grab your putter and head out to the 18-hole Inky’s Mini Golf at Sirenian Bay. You’ll get to see how your short game measures up while taking in the sights of the beautifully manicured, professionally designed course – all to a backdrop of local birdsong.

4 Trek deep into the jungle

Just 40 minutes from Placencia by boat, Monkey River is one of the area’s top sightseeing destinations. Cruise along the river spotting howler monkeys and other wildlife, visit a traditional village, and keep an eye out for manatees. Your tour operator can also help you access jungle activities like ziplining, river tubing, caving or swimming at the bass of a waterfall.

5 Wonder at ancient monuments

Belize is bursting with incredible Mayan monuments, with El Castillo being among the most popular. A long but scenic drive from Placencia, this enormous historic temple offers panoramic views of Belize and Guatemala – and is temptingly close to ancient caves waiting to be explored.

6 Pamper your senses

Put up your feet after a long day of sight-seeing or exploring and enjoy a treatment at The Siren’s Spa. Packages include massages, nail services and body treatments, and are infused with Placencia’s unmistakable Caribbean flair.

7 Take in a sunset

Sunset in Placencia is a time of wonder. Head to the pier to snap photographs of the fishermen bringing in their daily haul – you might spot dolphins leaping as well. Otherwise, find a vantage point on the lagoon side of the peninsula (or even out on the lagoon itself!) and wait for the golden hour to arrive.  A sunset sail with Captain Jak’s is a great option, or try the three60 Martini Bar for panoramic views and great cocktails.

Laid-back and surrounded by nature, Placencia offers endless opportunities to relax, explore or drink in the sights. Whatever inspires you, you’re bound to find something to suit!
