What do I need to travel to Belize?
Any trip overseas requires some planning and preparation – whether it’s passports, visas, vaccinations or making sure you have the right currency at hand. Here’s what you need before you travel to Belize.
1. A passport and a return ticket
If you’re traveling on an American passport and will be in Belize for 30 days or less, no visa is required. All you’ll need is a valid passport with 6 months or more remaining on it, a valid return ticket and proof of adequate funds. If you plan to stay longer, head to the local immigration office in Belize to pay the fee and have your passport stamped. Those traveling with kids may be asked to provide a US birth certificate or other documentation.
Slightly different requirements apply to cruise ship passengers traveling on ships that begin and end at US ports. These travelers may travel with US photo ID and a birth certificate, although requirements vary with different operators.
2. BZD, USD and maybe a credit card
The Belize dollar is the official currency of Belize, and is pegged to the US dollar at a ratio of $2BZD to US$1. US dollars are widely accepted, but it’s best to carry smaller denominations where possible. You’ll also need to set aside $39.25 in US dollars to pay the exit tax upon leaving.
While credit cards are accepted by most hotels, restaurants and tour operators in tourism areas, cash remains king. Visa and MasterCard are the most commonly accepted card types; you may have a harder time finding someone to accept your AMEX, Diners Club or Discover card.
3. A way to call home
If you’re planning on bringing your cell phone on your vacation, you have a few options. Local SIM cards are an affordable option for unlocked international cell phones. Travelers with locked cell phones will need to activate international roaming, which can be expensive. Consider using your phone only on your hotel wifi, or buying a cheap phone with a prepaid local SIM card instead. If you’re renting a car, the car rental company may just throw one in for free. Belize uses the same two-prong plugs that the US does, so charging your phone won’t be a problem.
4. Your recommended vaccinations
Proof of vaccination is required to enter Belize, but it’s highly recommended that you ensure you’re up to date on their routine vaccines, as well as your measles, Hep A and typhoid vaccines. Your doctor might also recommend Hep B and rabies vaccinations depending on your background and travel plans. Zika, malaria and dengue fever are all present in Belize, so take precautions to prevent transmission.
5. A light, flexible wardrobe
Belize has a warm, tropical climate, so pack accordingly. Select light, casual clothing that can be easily layered up, and ensure that you have a pair of pants and a long-sleeved shirt for those forays into the jungle. Hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and bug repellent are a must, but don’t worry if you forget anything – you can easily buy the essentials once you arrive.
6. Comprehensive travel insurance
It should go without saying, but always make sure that you have a travel insurance policy in place before you travel. This will protect you in the event of unforeseen issues such as cancelations, delays, loss or theft, or medical needs. Make sure that your policy covers you for the full duration of your trip. If you’re worried you’ve forgotten anything, check the Belize US Embassy website before you travel. It’s regularly updated with tips, advisories and recommendations, and will help steer you in the right direction.
